Description
The Bambara people are the largest ethnic group within Mali and occupy a savannah in the central part of the country. Bambara sculptures are primarily used during the annual ceremonies of the Guan society. This particular piece is a fine example of a significant figure known as Guandousou (or Bambara Queen) - a seated (or standing) maternity figure, which along with her male counterpart Guantigui, is surrounded by attendant figures in various positions during ceremonies.
