Baule Figure

Country of origin
Ivory Coast
Description

People of the Baule tribe from the west of the Ivory Coast are exceptionally sensitive wood-carvers. This beautiful statuette is a typical example, with the figure standing on a base with legs slightly bent and hands resting on the abdomen in a gesture of peace. Baule statuettes usually have elongated necks and a face with raised scarifications, bulging eyes and an elaborate coiffure. Known as Blolo Bla, the figure represents a spouse from the spirit world, which every Baule person is believed to have.
