Ethiopian cermonial cross

Ethiopian cermonial cross

Country of origin
Ethiopia
Description
Following the persecution during the Coptic (18th-early 20th century) period in ancient Egypt, Christians moved the church to sanctuary in Ethiopia where it continued to flourish for hundreds of years. Processional crosses such as this one were mostly made of metal - iron, copper, bronze, silver and rarely, gold. The intricate interlocking design echoes decorative forms found on the screens and friezes of Ethiopian medieval churches.
